* Education & Work Experience *

The time that I have spent interacting with homeless youth has been significant in developing a deeper appreciation for the impact school has had in my life. Education is one of the primary agents of socialization in the lives of children and teenagers yet many of the youth I have conversed with have either expressed negative attitudes toward school or are uninterested in attaining a high school degree because of their concern with their current circumstances. It is my hope as a future educator that I can instill and teach skills and attitudes that offer youth of all social classes the chance to succeed not just inside the classroom, but outside of it as well.

In regards to formal teaching experience, while I was attending classes for the TESL program at Hansa Language Centre 20 total hours of teaching and observing practicum was mandatory. I rotated between beginner level classes, intermediate level classes and advanced level classes, which exposed me to students of all kinds of nationalities. Teaching and observing at these three levels offered much insight and perspective to the challenges and difficulties individuals of different ethnicities face when learning the English language.

Also, a former professor of mine from Wilfrid Laurier asked me to be her Teaching Assistant for the first-year university course, Introducing Youth and Children¡¯s Studies. In this role, it was my responsibility to mark 80 essay-style midterms. Students were required to answer 3 of 5 questions, which focused on content from the course text, Children in Canada Today, as well as in-class material. Marking the midterms helped me better understand writing and reading comprehension at a university level, and how to better incorporate reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills when developing lessons plans for students.
